Adversarial Truth LLC is an Arizona-based domestic Limited Liability Company (LLC). It also commonly uses the name The Satanic Temple - Arizona, but does not list it as a "doing business as."

Prior to incorporation, the chapter was founded sometime in "early 2016" per its website.[1] However, the legal entity began in April 2017 when articles of incorporation were filed, with founding documents listing spokesperson Patrick "Stu" De Haan and chapterhead Michelle Shortt as the only corporate officers, and its historical physical location, 100 N Stone Ave, Ste 512. Tucson, AZ, 85701, matched listings for de Haan's law office at the time.[2][3] In December 2019, de Haan and Shortt were replaced with Scott Maul and Selena L. Yniguez.[4]. In March 2021, Maul was replaced with Katherine Diaz.[5]

Phoenix City Invocation

The Satanic Temple AZ describes its founding action as such:

The Satanic Temple - Arizona Chapter was founded in early 2016 with the Phoenix City Council Invocation Campaign initiated by Chapter Head Michelle Shortt and Spokesperson Stu de Haan. After making national headlines exposing religious privilege at local levels throughout the country, the chapter began.

The Arizona Republic newspaper summarized the chapter's earliest activity as such:[6]

Shortly after [forming], they requested to lead Phoenix's invocation. In reaction, the Phoenix council voted to end invocations at its meetings.[7]
A month later, Phoenix voted to reinstate the invocations, but, this time, only chaplains for the police and fire departments would be allowed to lead them.[8][9]

Scottsdale Invocation

In April 2016, the city of Scottsdale revoked an invitation for The Satanic Temple to give an opening invocation at the city council.[10] In 2018, through Shortt, the chapter began its case against the city of Scottsdale, which it lost after a bench trial in February 2020.[11] The Satanic Temple appealed the case in March 2020.[12]

In May 2021, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the original district court decision, establishing that it "did not err in entering judgment in favor of the City".[13]

Values

On its website, TST AZ describes itself as such:

Satanism as a religious movement.
Civic actions through activism.
Charitable works.
Community building for Satanists, atheists, and free-thinkers.
The mission of The Satanic Temple is to encourage benevolence and empathy among all people within reason, reject tyrannical authority, advocate practical common sense and justice, and be directed by the human conscience to undertake noble pursuits guided by the individual will.
Many of those interested in The Satanic Temple come to us because of our fierce activism. Satan is the ultimate archetype and thus makes his character a perfect weapon to be able to combat Church and State issues.
It is important to realize that Satanism is our religion, held on by deeply held beliefs that have shaped and molded us into the people we are today.

The website also references the chapter taking part in a Menstruatin' with Satan donation drive to hosting "Satanic Cleansing and Destruction Rituals".
